GBR Education Experience Program Funding Extended to December 2025

EducaTours of Australia is very pleased to hear the announcement by the Queensland Dept of Tourism, Innovation & Sport that this incredible program has been extended for another year!

" The Great Barrier Reef Education Experience Program provides a subsidy to primary and secondary school students in Queensland undertaking school excursions along the length of the Great Barrier Reef (GBR), from Bundaberg to Cooktown. The program supports opportunities for students to undertake place-based learning activities in the GBR, and provides opportunities for tourism operators in the region to enhance and develop educational products and experiences to stimulate new market travel and subsequent tourism visitation to the region.

Commencing in June 2021, the program provides up to $150 per student paid directly to schools to go towards the cost of a school excursion which includes a reef experience.

To be eligible for the subsidy the school excursion itinerary must include at least 1 curriculum-related reef activity, facilitated by a commercial reef tourism operator registered with the program, operating within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and World Heritage boundaries.

Applications for the education subsidy are now open to schools for excursions planned to be undertaken up until December 2025 "

�� Important: For health and safety reasons, students cannot remain on the coach alone while the group is at a venue, and only water is allowed on board.

While there are no current government mandates , we strongly recommend that all students and supervisors take a Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) the night before departure to minimize any risk of spreading illness.

First Aid and Medical Care

While our team is trained to assist in emergencies, the touring school is responsible for first aid and medical needs . This includes:

�� Carrying a first aid kit .
�� Having a plan for students with pre-existing medical conditions .
�� Ensuring students with motion sickness sit at the front of the bus and have necessary medication.

�� Tip: Hydration is key! We provide refillable water bottles for students to ensure they drink enough water throughout the trip.

5. Accommodation and Meal Safety

We only work with accommodation providers that meet strict safety and hygiene standards . Additionally, students and supervisors:

�� Are only allowed in designated school group accommodations .
�� Must supervise students at all times —our team does not take responsibility for student supervision in accommodations.

For meals, special dietary requirements must be submitted at least 21 days before the tour to ensure we can cater to all needs.

6. On-Tour Rules: Keeping Things Running Smoothly

Boarding & Disembarking Buses

Supervisors must always be present when students board or leave the coach.
Roll calls and headcounts ensure no one is left behind.
No one should sit in the bus luggage compartments (yes, it has happened before!) .

Supervision at Public Venues

At museums, parks, and attractions , students must always stay in groups with an assigned supervisor. Public restrooms must be checked before students enter.

No Mobile Phones for Students

To prevent distractions and privacy issues, students are not allowed to bring mobile phones or WiFi-enabled devices . Schools should provide a designated contact number for parents to reach students if necessary.

7. Handling Emergencies & Unforeseen Changes

Even with the best planning, unexpected things happen. Our approach? Stay calm and have a backup plan!

�� If an itinerary change is needed (e.g., bad weather, flight delays) , we immediately coordinate with teachers to make alternate arrangements.
�� In case of injury or illness , the touring school is responsible for first aid, but our team will assist in arranging medical care.
�� Lost luggage? We help track it down and ensure students have essentials in the meantime.

8. Cancellation Policy: What Happens if Plans Change?

Life is unpredictable, so we provide clear cancellation policies :

�� More than 35 days before departure: Loss of non-refundable deposit.
�� Less than 35 days before departure: Loss of full final payment.
�� If the tour is canceled due to government regulations: Schools are responsible for extra costs (e.g., return travel, quarantine).

�� Pro Tip: Travel insurance isn’t included in our package, so we highly recommend that all passengers have their own!

Schools traveling to Canberra may be eligible for a subsidy towards travel costs

An Australian Federal Government initiative designed to provide financial assistance to support on-site civics and citizenship learning for students traveling to Canberra. The Parliament And Civics Education Rebate (PACER) is offered to all schools who met the eligibility and requirements of the program, and is dependant on the distance from the school to Canberra GPO.

EducaTours of Australia help organise all of the necessary paperwork before, during and after the tour to ensure your school and it's students receive available PACER rebates. This includes customising a trip itinerary to include all mandatory institutions (Parliament House, Australian War Memorial and Old Parliament House; either Museum of Australian Democracy or National Electoral Education Centre) and alternative institutions should mandatory activities be unavailable (Government House, High Court of Australia, National Archives of Australia, National Portrait Gallery*, National Museum of Australia*, National Capital Authority*, National Gallery of Australia* & National Film and Sound Archive's*).

GBR Education Experience Program Funding Extended to December 2024

After many many emails, phone calls and a nervous wait EducaTours of Australia is very pleased to hear the announcement by the Queensland Dept of Tourism, Innovation & Sport that this incredible program has been extended for another year!

Commencing in June 2021, the 3 year program provides up to $150 per student paid directly to schools to go towards the cost of a school excursion which includes a reef experience.

Applications for the education subsidy are now open to schools for excursions planned to be undertaken up until December 2024 ."

WHAT DOES "FULLY ESCORTED EDUCATIONAL TOURS" MEAN?

Have you ever been on a guided tour or holiday where you arrive at the meeting point filled with excitement because making it to that point was all you had to do, everything from here on had been organized for you and now it’s time to hand over to your guide and simply enjoy the experience.

Now think back to those trips when you were in charge of planning all the activities, meals, accommodation and everyone kept asking you “What are we doing next?” and “I’m hungry, what’s for (breakfast/lunch/dinner)?”. It can be hard to focus on the amazing experience in front of you when you’re busy managing everyone around you.

So back to our original question, what does “Fully Escorted Educational Tours” mean? It means that our amazing Tour Co-ordinators not only book all your flights, coaches, venues, activities, accommodation, meals and yes snacks too! They also accompany you on the tour to escort the group and continue to look after all of the check-ins, paperwork (think flights, activity waivers, special diets, etc), transportation and help sort out any minor issues or dramas that may arise. Our On Tour Co-ordinators also provide all of the commentary throughout the tour, allowing the coach drivers to concentrate on driving the coach safely without the distraction of speaking on the microphone and pointing out places of interest etc.

At EducaTours of Australia we complete all of the arrangements for the tour on behalf of the school, from start to finish. This allows teachers to be free of all the worries associated with the preparation and organization of a tour, both before and during the tour. Allowing teachers to concentrate on their students’ needs, ensuring they get the most out of their experience.

If you’re still struggling to see why having an On Tour Co-ordinator escorting your tour group would be helpful, picture this; You’re halfway through an amazing educational program and Little Sally isn’t feel well. The teacher has to leave the group with Little Sally - Not to worry! Your On Tour Co-ordinator will see that the remainder of the students meet up with another teacher and will even join the group as an extra supervisor with the teachers if required. All of our Tour Co-Ordinators hold current Blue Cards issued under the guidelines of the Queensland Government’s Blue Card Services.
